The only real trick to operating this waffle maker is finding a good recipe. I didn't bother trying Waring's selections and instead found my favorite recipe online.

If you use a cooking spray instead of brushing on oil, make sure that you use the kind for grilling and high heat cooking. The original Pam leaves a sticky residue since it is not meant for such temperatures. A good, flavorless oil works best.

The whole thing cleans up in minutes, if not seconds. The nonstick grids release the waffles so cleanly that I never have to clean it. Too much batter poured onto the surface might require some exterior clean-up, but the removable metal pan underneath the waffle iron can be easily hand-washed. A temperature control allows you to control the darkness/crispness of your waffles. The manufacturer suggests a setting of 4; I found that I had to set it to 5 before I got an adequately crisp result. (This may have to do with the recipe I use as well as my personal preference for a crisp exterior.)

For recipes, I suggest that cooks use those that require stiff egg white folded into the batter for the classic Belgian waffle. These recipes usually only take ten minutes or so to whip up, and are not as time-consuming as those that require yeast.

All in all, I like this waffle maker. Now, if only my husband would make waffles at home as he does in hotels, instead of waiting for me to do it.

My family got into making whole wheat waffles years ago. We went through two or three $30 Bakers before we stumbled upon the Waring Pro. Today, exactly one year and one week after getting this waffle iron (so it's no longer under warranty), it made a very loud popping noise and started throwing sparks all over the place. Normally, I wouldn't be so quick to judge and deem this model of poor quality, if this weren't our second one.

The first one lasted less than a month before it died--the lights would still come on but it wouldn't heat up. So we got the one that died today as a warranty replacement. We had bought it from Macy's and they were really nice about it then and sent us the replacement with free shipping. I had called Waring's warranty department first but I was told that I would be responsible for shipping both ways (which can easily add up to more than half what this waffle iron is worth), and that it would take 8-12 weeks for them to fix it.

I am willing to bet that having it shipped back to Waring for service now would be more expensive that buying a new one given it's no longer under warranty. Overall, this model has been a huge disappointment for the price. It makes great waffles, sure, but it really ought to last more than a few months.

UPDATE: I was looking through the reviews today and noticed that exactly 1/3 of all reviews report electrical failure, most within a couple of months of purchase. We used our waffle maker exactly 4 times. On the 5th time it simply didn't heat up. The base got hot but not the irons. Unfortunately we didn't register the product and lost the necessary paperwork. For being so pricey this product should have lasted years not 1 month!

For years I have seen waffle makers like the Waring Pro in hotels and restaurants and have always wanted to own one, but could not bring myself to spend the money. When the opportunity arose to finally get one, I jumped at the chance. Not only am I glad I did, but so is my family.

This waffle maker makes the best waffles. Hot and crisp and perfectly shaped. I find it is much easier to use this waffle maker than others I have owned in the past. And there is less mess if used properly. You just wait for the maker to heat up, brush with oil (please do not use cooking spray), adjust the darkness of your waffle, pour in the batter, close the lid, flip, let it bake and wait for the beep to let you know your waffle is done. Just add butter and syrup and enjoy. Also if you do add to much batter, don;t worry about it. There is a drip tray that can easily be cleaned by hand in the sink.

I haven't tried using waffle batter from scratch yet, but plan to do so in the near future. But I have been using the Golden Malted Pancake & Waffle mix and it is awesome. The waffles come out perfect and taste just like the ones you get in the hotels.

After I ordered this waffle maker, I went back and reviewed all the advice previous purchasers gave about it. I was shocked by all the disappointment people had with it, but it made me even more curious about what it would be like. I have to say that even after only one use, I completely disagree with the bad reviews this waffle maker had received!

I understand that it would be frustrating if it dies after only a few months or even a year. We all desire for small appliances to last a long time. And since I just received it this week, I cannot speak to how it will fare for me, BUT, it's performance and the pleasure of my family at breakfast this morning far outweighs my concerns about a short life span of this waffle maker.

It makes amazing !!! waffles. My mom always gave me the advice that before you start trying your own recipes, use the ones that come with the machine. So, I started out with the overnight waffle recipe from the manual. I made it last night and then added the eggs, vanilla, and baking soda this morning per the recipe. I followed the directions (which were wonderfully detailed) and made a batch of delicious waffles. I started with the setting on #4 as the manual recommended and actually preferred them a little darker (in between the 4 and 5). My husband was blown away by how light and airy the waffles were. We (my husband, mother, and I) all agreed that we have never had a lighter, airier waffle!

So, I am truly excited about this waffle maker. There are a few other reasons (besides the waffles themselves) why I love this waffle maker. #1: There is an audible beep when it is ready to be used and it beeps when the waffle is done. This is great for a mom like me (of 3 little ones) who is always on the go and not always within eyeshot of the waffle maker.
#2: There is an on/off switch. Every other waffle maker I've ever seen only turns on and off with the plug in of the cord.
#3: The cord neatly wraps around the inside of the bottom.
#4: The measuring cup is the perfect guide of how much to put in for each waffle.
#5: The nonstick grid works great. I sprayed it each time with cooking spray (and the directions note not to spray it until it is heated and ready for use). I used regular cooking spray from BJ's. I didn't need to pay for the expensive high heat spray and it still worked great. I noticed another reviewer preferred that and I'm sure it works great, but if you don't have it, your regular spray will work fine.
#6: The removable tray that goes under the waffle maker makes clean up a snap!

I did carefully read and follow the directions which made it easy to use. Use the enclosed measuring cup (which is packed in the carboard around the waffle maker), pour in the batter, and then turn 180 degrees, and cook. At first, my batter oozed out along the edge. The main reason for that is that our kitchen is a tiny bit slanted. But, I think all houses are like that. So, make sure you pick the counter in your kitchen that is most level.

As for the cost versus the life of this appliance, I have one thought to share--For my family, it would cost $45 for us to go out to breakfast and have Belgian waffles in a restaurant. After only 2 breakfasts, this waffle maker will have paid for itself!

I just got this waffle maker and love it. It makes large Belgian waffles that you can top off with fresh fruit such as blueberries. The nooks and crannies of the waffle keep the fruit in place.

I also froze one waffle for the next morning and toasted it in a toaster. I had to cut the waffle into four sections, and because it was so fat it barely fit in the wide-slot toaster I have. The waffle was also dry after toasting. Therefore, my recommendation is to make all your waffles fresh.

Although the waffle maker comes with a plastic measuring cup, I find that it's easier just to pour the batter directly onto the center of the waffle plate to about 3/4 full and then spread the batter out to the edge with a spatula, close the waffle unit, and flip it.

The waffle iron takes about 4 minutes to warm up for the first waffle of the batch and takes about 20 minutes to cool down before you can wipe it down.

I recommend using the recipes provided in the instruction book because the recipes you'll find on a box of waffle ingredients are for small waffles. For instance, I only got 1-1/2 waffles out of a recipe designed for 6 waffles. Unless the recipe is specifically for Belgian waffles, you'll find yourself short batter.

I read the other reviews and noticed about 40% of users complain the waffle maker fails to heat up or fails after a few uses. My boyfriend hasn't had that experience yet. He has this same waffle maker for over one year and has used it around six times without fail.

Since I just got this unit I cannot attest to it's longevity; however, if I should encounter a problem in the future, I will update my review. Therefore, be sure to check this post again if you are concerned. If all remains well, you will not see any updates.

There's a price quality ratio that is critical when you buy things. At $150 this is a rather poor purchase. At $80 it is just barely worthwhile. At $35 it would be exactly a good value for the price.

This particular waffle iron is definately NOT "professional grade" as this product is described. It is incredibly light weight, way over packaged, and just feels cheap.

Inside the box - the waffle maker (grounded three prong plug), a drip tray, measuring cup, and instructions / recepie book.

My particular sample arrived with a cracked base. No big deal, I'm pretty handy, 6 screws and I got to see the inside of this unit. The silver base is styrene plastic (good for me, since I could glue the crack), the wiring inside is light weight (certainly safe, but not professional grade by any stretch), and the black base is a more flexible plastic. On the outside you'll notice the handle is a very cheap plastic. The two metal stands are thin metal. The griddle itself is non-stick coated. The drip tray is relatively thin metal. The temperature controls and on/off switch are cheap "parts bin" items. And the rotation just feels cheap.

This unit is nothing like the ones you may have seen in hotels at continental breakfasts. I would guess this particular "professional" waffle maker would last maybe one day in heavy use.

At $150, there are much much better waffle makers. At $80 there are better:

I read through the other reviews before putting hand to keyboard...having used this device only twice thus far, I cannot vouch for its longterm endurance. If it fails to operate in three weeks, I surely will revise my review.

But for now, it's working, and it works well. I have had no problems with waffles sticking or messes being created. It would appear that if one actually follows the instructions of the manufacturers, everything works pretty well. The waffles cook quickly and easily, and pop out of the iron without any struggle. The device is also relatively compact and easy to store in my pantry. My only quibble with the design thus far is that the cord is a little too short. I either have to stick it on a counter right next the outlet (which can be awkward) or drag out an extension cord.

However --- echoing another reviewer, I think that a $150 price tag is more than this device merits. I might buy it for $80; I would be more likely to buy it for $50. $150 does not seem to be a reasonable price for this. This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my wife. Previously, she had owned several waffle makers with disappointing results: inconsistent cooking, messy, premature failure of units, etc.

Today, she operated the Waring Pro for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. The cooking time was very short, (~75 seconds), and the results were exceptionally good.

We followed the directions to use #4 setting on the heating knob, but noticed subsequent waffles were progressively darker, but still satisfactory.

Our only complaint is with the accompanying measuring cup for the batter--the top opening is too small for transfering the batter from the mixing bowl into it, but that doesn't affect the performance with the main unit.

One note: The day after Christmas, we were perusing the aisles of BJ's (an East Coast store similiar to the "big box" Sam's Club). For the first time I noticed a similar Waring Pro for $30 less than Amazon's price. I couldn't remember the entire model number, but it ended with "BJ," which probably meant it was a special order for this chain of stores. These had a slightly different handle and temperature knob. This Belgian Waffle Maker creates a waffles that are crispy on the outside, but I personally found them a little too chewy on the inside. However, this added thickness would also allow for easier additions to the batter (fruit and such) to be cooked into the waffle if you desired - something thinner waffles cannot do as easily. So, if you're a fan of Belgian-style waffles, this machine does the job wonderfully.

The construction of this waffle maker is pretty solid, with a couple nice features that *should* be on all small kitchen appliances but are not (like the wrap-around-and-hide cord.) The counter space on this makes a pretty large footprint, so unless you have waffles very regularly, it'll probably be put elsewhere in the kitchen or pantry, out of sight. (Which is somewhat unfortunate, since it's a very attractive waffle maker.)

Since I've only had the unit a few days, I can't speak to its longevity, but the quality seems to be quite high, though I do with the base was a bit heftier (and metal rather than plastic.)

Bought it before Christmas and took it to my parents and on Christmas morning made Belgian Waffles for everyone then took it over to my son's home and the morning after Christmas made them all Belgian Waffles. We let the leftover waffles cool then put them in freezer bags and froze them so mom and dad could have waffles days and weeks later. This is the waffle-maker I've been waiting for!

It is large, but the handle folds down for easy storage and the cord winds up on the bottom. That squares the unit up enough to be stored easily in a cabinet between uses.

I was surprised at how easy clean up was. I pulled out the drip tray to wash in the sink. Then it only took a paper towel to wipe the rest of the unit off. The inside is extremely non-stick, batter and oil slide off. The steel on the outside is very smooth, making outside clean up simple. Although, if you are the type of OCD person that must clean everything immediately, this is not for you. The unit took about 20 minutes to cool down after I turned it off and unplugged it. I did not try to clean it hot.

I tried the waffle recipe in the book. Next time I will use my own recipe. The books recipe used 3 eggs + 1 white, milk and butter. Fortunately, none of the family vegans were around or I could not have gotten away with that. Since I wasn't going waste a yolk, I just put the extra yolk in the batter. It was a yeast batter. After I finally got done mixing it (lots of dishes, big pain), the instructions said to let it sit for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Uh-huh. Like my hungry family is going to patiently wait that long. I made the waffles. The recipe only made 7 instead of the promised 10, but that was probably my fault for not waiting. They still came out very good though.

Also, after the 3rd waffle, the cooking time seemed to get slightly shorter and the waffles were not coming out as dark. I just turned the timer up a half a point.

Even though the surface is non-stick, it still must be oiled. I used a silicone brush with olive oil. This worked ok, but splashed some oil on the outside. I'm going to get an oil spritzer before I make these again.

The unit seals well. I used the measuring cup and none of the batter spilled out while turning. The waffles are huge. About the same size they would be if you went to a restaurant and ordered one. So, if you use your own waffle recipe, keep in mind that you will need more batter.

The instructions said it would take 4 minutes to heat up, it took mine about 2.5. The unit beeps when it is heated up and when each waffle is ready. Very nice not to have to watch it. Each waffle takes about 2 minuts to cook. The waffles can be frozen and toasted later. However, to fit in a toaster, you would have to break them in half. A toaster oven also reheats them nicely.

Another thing I really liked was the variable settings. You can decide exactly how brown or cooked you want your waffles. I cooked the ones I was going to freeze on a lower setting. That way they don't dry out when reheated.

This waffle maker is by no mean "pro." The instructions scream in bold letters "FOR HOUSEHOLD USE ONLY." The base is molded silver plastic made to look like metal. Aside from all this dishonesty, this is a good waffle maker.

I made a big bowl of batter and invited some friends over for brunch. I invited them to make their own waffles. I gave them the measuring cup and told them the simple instructions. When you first close the waffle maker on a new batch of batter, it'll almost certainly ooze and sputter out of the sides. It looks alarming and messy. But there's no need to worry. Batter simply flakes off the sides of the iron itself and the drip pan catches the rest.

My first impression when opening the box was less than delightful. Something flew out, and made a loud "crack". A few minutes later, I learned that it was the chintzy (and now broken) measuring cup that they include. So, if you decide to add this to your kitchen, be careful when you open the box.

I also was a bit surprised to find that the base is plastic. Maybe it's just me, but I expected it to be metal, or at least plated. I wouldn't say it looks cheap, but I'd expect it to be a little nicer for what this costs.

That all said, this waffle maker works really well. After spending a minute or two going through the manual and making some batter, I had really great waffles in under three minutes. There are alerts to let you know when the griddles are ready, when to flip, and when your waffle is done. Just going through the suggestions in the manual produced excellent results.

I was especially surprised by how easy it is to clean. If you properly season the griddles (using non-stick spray, or oil), there's hardly any residue left over, so cleaning the unit involves just a few quick wipes with a paper towel.

The base also serves as cord storage, which I thought was a nice feature, if you're like me and don't need to have your waffle maker constantly plugged in and ready for those unexpected guests who demand professional restaurant-quality waffles when they come by.

One thing that did leave me a bit disappointed though, was that this only makes waffles. I've seen similar units that have inserts that allow you to make crepes, too. I have had this waffle maker for a little over a year so it is now out of warranty. It just stopped heating up last weekend. After some online research I found out what goes wrong. When I plug mine in the orange light turns on and you can hear the relay click but it does not get hot. If you are experiencing this problem and you are out of warranty please don't throw out your waffle maker. It can be fixed and the part is only $1.50. The part you need is a thermal fuse and it can be found under the round stainless cover of the lower griddle. It is a 250v 240 degree celsius thermal fuse. It is covered by a white silicon tube. Apparently this thermal fuse overheats and blows and power no longer gets to the burners. I have replaced the fuse and my waffle maker works again. This is a really great product but they either have the wrong size fuse in the unit or it was defective. Mine blew when I made a batch of waffles, turned off the unit and then turned it back on to make a second batch. It never heated back up. I kept my temperature control at 3.5. I hope this helps all you waffltiers out there. Also, the golden waffle mix is the best and you need to buy an isi brand whip cream dispenser. You add two pints of heavy whipping cream and three table spoons of powdered sugar and have the best whip cream for those tasty waffles. I LOVE this waffle iron. It makes it extremely easy to make perfect waffles every time. No more waffles stuck to the iron or burnt to a crisp. Just add the batter (it overflows if there is too much or you can make "spider" waffles by putting in just a little), close the lid, flip over, and wait for the beep. I did have to adjust the timer for my "secret" recipe (Golden Malted Pancake & Waffle Flour, Original, 33-Ounce Cans (Pack of 3)), but that was all I had to do to ensure perfect waffles EVERY time.

I have seen several reviews about the durability of this machine and not having used it long enough I can't speak to that.
What I can speak to is the unit's operation.
After the initial warm-up, this machine turns out waffles that are consistently the same level of brown that you have chosen. Every single waffle was identical in color and completeness of baking.
The time to cook each waffle was about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes so cooking up a batch of a half dozen waffles takes about 35 minutes.

As to durability, my wife told me that she went to a breakfast buffet restaurant and the Belgian Waffle Maker THEY used was this identical machine. They make many dozens of waffles every DAY and this is the unit they have chosen to make those waffles. So based upon that, assuming the normal care one would take with any kitchen appliance, I don't see why this unit couldn't produce hundreds of waffles for you as well.

The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that the top of the unit was dented when it arrived. That means the packaging for the unit is not stiff enough to protect it during shipping. This wasn't enough of a problem to return the unit since it is merely cosmetic and the dent can probably be popped out once I do a major cleaning of the unit. Other than that, it is easy to use with its three beeps to indicate the waffle has baked, which really helps my wife who is legally blind so it is hard for her to see. Besides which, the green light does come on and off while cooking so it isn't as reliable of a gauge as to when the waffle is actually completely cooked, while the beeps are.
So you can cook and not have to stand in front of it while it is cooking since you can hear the beeps from 10-15 feet away. So you can be doing other things in the kitchen or, in our case, sitting at the dining room table while it cooks.
The spill tray is convenient for when you accidentally overfill the griddle with batter. It is so much easier to wash off the small pan than to haul the whole unit to the sink to clean up any accidents.

I will say that the measuring cup is pretty useless if you use a batter that is the least bit thick. What we did was to use it once to gauge what the right amount of batter would be to fill the grille to the right level and then used a ladle to pour that amount for subsequent batches of waffles. You can get a Nylon ladle from Amazon for about $3.60 - Pedrini Black & Satin Nylon Ladle. The nylon will keep from scratching the non-stick finish on the grill and is safe from melting up to 410 degrees.
That was so much easier since the measuring cup is narrow and the bottom is not curved but has 90 degree angles so it is almost impossible to get all of the batter out of the cup.

A curved bottomed measuring cup like Pyrex makes would work much better since then you can get the batter out of the bottom of the cup with a spatula.

Follow Up Review:
Well now that I have been able to use this waffle Maker for a couple of months now, I can speak about its durability and reliability. We use it at least once a week and make at least a dozen waffles each time we use it. I am happy to say that there hasn't been a single problem with reliability and the consistency of the waffles it makes is at a professional level.
My wife often makes a half dozen and puts them in the freezer so we can grab one and pop it into the microwave or the toaster. The brown color is consistent with the setting you choose. From first waffle to last one, they look like that came off a production line.

I am always teasing my wife because she burns waffles and pancakes and then serves then with the burned side down to hide her error. With this unit, no need to check the bottom of the waffle for burning because they don't burn!

I can see why this unit is used by breakfast buffet restaurants since it does all of the work except mixing the batter. All the cook has to do is pour the batter, lock it down and rotate it. I have no idea what brought about the drop in price from Waring, but I think this price point is much more reasonable for the functionality and quality of the device.

We were always big fans of waffles. The old chrome waffle iron we used for more than forty years made nice crispy (thin) waffles. When it finally died a few years ago, we just did without for some time. After deciding to get a new iron we started looking at the options. We decided to go with the thicker "Belgian" style waffle maker and after further study we decided on a "flip" type model. We looked hard at the Waring Pro but as I said it was too expensive. We ended up getting a Presto 03510 FlipSide Belgian Waffle Maker. It worked great with just a few drawbacks. When we had a chance to pick up the Waring Pro, we went for it.

The Waring Pro has proven to be a great performer. The flip function allows the batter to coat both the upper and lower grids evenly and simultaneously. This creates a better crust and a lighter fluffier interior. Using the waffle maker couldn't be easier, just plug in, turn on, wait for the iron to preheat, spray a light coating of non-stick cooking spray on both plates (first waffle only), using the included measuring cup pour on the batter, close the maker and flip. The machine will tell you when the waffle is done, just flip again and remove.
The maker has several great features:

I have fired up the waring Belgian waffle maker about 7 or 8 times successfully, I have made perfect waffles about 5 out of those 7 tries. The keys to a successful batch for me are the following:
1. Prepare your batter ahead of time or just before you heat the unit (and plenty of it as this thing takes alot just to make one full sized waffle)
2. Spray or brush the nonstick surface AFTER HEATING, doing so first or insufficiently will lead to non heating grills, or sticking waffles.
3.Follow your batter directions and NEVER FORGET THE OIL in your batter.
4. Make sure the heat setting is where you want it before warming the unit, as the heat cannot be adjusted once preheated.

I like the included cup with batter line, and the fold away handle makes this unit a little less gigantic, but it is big. Fairly lightweight though so removing and putting away isn't too burdensome.
I had a really hard time cleaning this unit the one time I forgot the oil in my batter as the grills do not remove.
There are few things more comforting in the food world than a big warm cozy waffle and with a little practice this machine will have your churning them out for your family and friends.
